S.1 learners use art to promote peace and unity at KitebiSS
In a bid to inspire hope, promote understanding and foster peaceful coexistence among young people, the Lions Club of Kampala Central, in collaboration with the LEOs Club of Kitebi Secondary School, organised a Lions International Peace Poster Contest under the theme, Harmony in Humanity.

The contest majorly involved senior one learners, who used their artistic skills to express their understanding of peace, unity and the importance of embracing diversity.

Through drawings, illustrations and creative representations, the learners explored how people regardless of their cultures, religions and social backgrounds can appreciate their differences, respect one another and live together harmoniously.

A striking feature of the learners’ artwork was the recurring use of symbols associated with unity, nature and humanity.

Most of the posters featured the globe, representing the world as one shared home, alongside natural elements such as the sky and birds, which reflected peace, freedom and hope.

Other illustrations depicted people or human figures with open hands, symbolising friendship, acceptance, cooperation and a willingness to embrace others.

Some learners also incorporated national flags into their drawings, highlighting the importance of unity among people from different countries and backgrounds.

Despite the similarities in the symbols used, each poster offered a creative interpretation of the theme, and provided a platform for the young artists to communicate their visions of a peaceful society, while highlighting the role of mutual respect, love and understanding in bringing people together.

According to Mr Reagan Lutaaya, the club’s patron, he explained that the theme, Harmony in Humanity reminds people that, despite differences in culture, background, beliefs and physical appearance, they remain part of one human family.

He observed that when young people are given an opportunity to express their understanding of peace especially through art, this opens their minds to appreciate the value of unity, love, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, which helps in nurturing a generation that values diversity.

“By encouraging young people to express their vision of peace through art, we nurture a generation that values diversity and embraces the beauty of living together in harmony,” Mr Lutaaya said.
The patron further emphasised the importance of inspiring hope, promoting understanding and building communities in which everyone feels accepted and valued.

Beyond the competition, the activity offered learners an opportunity to reflect on their individual and collective responsibilities in promoting peace within their schools, families and communities.
It also demonstrated how creative platforms can be used to engage young people in conversations about social values and encourage them to become advocates of unity and peaceful coexistence.

In recognition of the learners’ creativity and participation, those who produced outstanding posters were rewarded with gifts, while all participants received certificates of participation in appreciation of their efforts.

The recognition not only celebrated the learners’ artistic abilities, but also encouraged them to continue exploring their talents and using creative expression to communicate positive messages within their communities.

Through its motto, We Serve, Lions International continues to promote humanitarian service, encourage community participation and inspire initiatives that contribute to a more understanding and peaceful society.
