Col. Nakalema inspires learners with values, leadership and economic empowerment at Kitebi SS

In a bid to reaffirm its commitment to nurturing disciplined, responsible and self-reliant learners, Kitebi Secondary School organised an inspirational mentorship session led by Col. Edith Nakalema., the Head of State Investors Protection Unit.

Addressing the learners at the school, Col. Nakalema challenged students to embrace integrity, leadership and economic empowerment as the foundation for a successful future. She encouraged them to look beyond academic excellence and intentionally cultivate values that would enable them to become productive citizens and agents of positive change in their communities.

Col. Nakalema emphasized that while people strive to be successful, many fail along the way. Therefore, she noted that true success is built on discipline, honesty, hard work and a clear sense of purpose, urging learners to remain focused on their education despite the many distractions facing today’s youth.

She reminded the students that education remains one of the greatest equalizers and encouraged them to seize every learning opportunity available to them. According to Col. Nakalema, she explained, “Every learner possesses unique potential, and with determination, resilience and consistency, you can transform not only your own lives, but also contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s social and economic development.”

A key highlight of her address was the importance of economic independence among young people. She challenged learners to begin developing an entrepreneurial mindset while still in school by acquiring practical skills, identifying opportunities within their communities and appreciating the value of hard work. She noted that young people who become innovative and financially responsible are better positioned to create opportunities for themselves and others, ultimately contributing to national development.

At a time when many young people are increasingly exposed to peer pressure, substance abuse and other negative influences, Col. Nakalema challenged learners to remain grounded in strong moral values and integrity. She encouraged them to make wise decisions, cultivate friendships that inspire positive growth, and remain committed to their academic and personal goals, noting that the choices they make today will determine the future they build tomorrow.

Recognizing the growing influence of technology, she advised students to use social media responsibly by embracing platforms that promote learning, innovation, networking and personal development instead of engaging in activities that waste valuable time or expose them to harmful content. She reminded learners that the digital space can either become a tool for growth or a barrier to success, depending on how it is used.

In her address, she further encouraged learners to speak out against all forms of abuse and exploitation, assuring them that reporting misconduct is an act of courage that protects both themselves and others.

She emphasized, “Every child deserves to study in a safe, supportive and respectful environment where they can reach their full potential without fear or intimidation.”

On the other hand, Hajj Muhammed Kamulegeya, Kitebi Secondary School Team Leader applauded Col. Nakalema for taking time to mentor the learners, describing the session as one that perfectly aligns with the school’s vision of producing all-round graduates equipped for life beyond the classroom.

He noted that while academic excellence remains central to the school’s mission, Kitebi Secondary School equally prioritizes character formation, leadership development, patriotism, innovation and practical life skills that prepare learners to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

“Our responsibility as educators goes beyond preparing learners to pass examinations. We are committed to nurturing disciplined, ethical and innovative young people who will become responsible leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals capable of transforming their communities and our country,” Hajj Kamulegeya said.

He encouraged learners to internalize the guidance shared during the mentorship session and allow it to shape their daily decisions, reminding them that success is achieved through consistency, discipline and a willingness to continuously learn and improve.

The mentorship engagement formed part of Kitebi Secondary School’s broader commitment to exposing learners to accomplished leaders, professionals and public servants whose experiences inspire students to dream bigger, make informed life choices and appreciate the value of service to society.

Over the years, the school has continued to invest in holistic education by complementing classroom instruction with mentorship programmes, leadership initiatives, sports, vocational training, career guidance and co-curricular activities that equip learners with the knowledge, values and practical competencies needed to excel in higher education, the workplace and entrepreneurship.

During the inspirational session learners were also given an opportunity to expresse appreciation for the invaluable guidance they had received. These pledged to uphold discipline, work hard, embrace integrity and become ambassadors of positive change within their families, communities and the nation.

As she concluded her engagement, Col. Nakalema prayed for the learners, asking God to bless them with good health, wisdom and perseverance, and to help them realize their dreams and become responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.
