Why career guidance is important in schools

In today’s highly competitive job market, where many young people complete their education but struggle to secure meaningful employment, career guidance has become an essential component of quality education. Equipping learners with the right information, skills, attitudes, and career planning strategies enables them to make informed decisions about their future and increases their chances of succeeding in an ever-changing world of work.

Speaking as the Chief Guest during the 4th VTAB Graduation Ceremony at Sayidina Abubakar Secondary School, Hajj Muhammed Kamulegeya, Team Leader of Kitebi Secondary School, emphasized the urgent need for schools to strengthen career guidance and counselling programmes. He noted that many young people are either unaware of the wide range of career opportunities available to them or lack the skills, attitudes, and technical competencies required to compete in today’s labour market.

“It is necessary that the education system of this country targets producing graduates who are needed by the current and future labour market,” Hajj Kamulegeya said.

He encouraged schools to integrate career guidance into the learning process so that learners are exposed to different professions, understand emerging employment trends, and are prepared to make informed career choices from an early stage.

Why career guidance matters

According to Hajj Kamulegeya, effective career guidance helps transform learners from being job seekers into innovators, entrepreneurs, and job creators. It empowers students to discover their strengths, align their interests with career opportunities, and develop the confidence needed to thrive in the workplace or establish their own enterprises.

Career guidance also bridges the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the labour market by exposing learners to practical skills, mentorship, and real-world opportunities.

A well-structured career guidance programme enables learners to:

• Understand local, regional, and international labour market opportunities.
• Gain knowledge about current and emerging career paths.
• Make informed career choices based on their interests, abilities, and talents.
• Develop employability, entrepreneurship, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Connect with professionals, mentors, and industry experts in their fields of interest.
• Build confidence in planning for higher education, vocational training, or employment.
• Appreciate the importance of lifelong learning and continuous skills development.
• Develop an entrepreneurial mindset that enables them to create employment opportunities for themselves and others.

Emerging opportunities for young people

Hajj Kamulegeya further highlighted that the Government of Uganda has established several programmes aimed at creating employment, promoting entrepreneurship, and improving household incomes. These initiatives provide numerous opportunities that learners should be encouraged to explore while still in school.

Among the notable government programmes are:

• The Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture (PMA).
• The National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS).
• Initiatives promoting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
• Policies that attract local and foreign investors to establish industries and businesses in Uganda.
• Government-supported financing and soft loan facilities for youth and entrepreneurs.
• Skills development and vocational training initiatives that prepare young people for self-employment and the modern workforce.

“All these programmes are aimed at creating opportunities for employment which the youth should be guided to target while in school,” Hajj Kamulegeya noted.

Building a future ready generation

As the world of work continues to evolve due to technological advancements, innovation, and changing economic demands, schools have an important responsibility to prepare learners beyond academic excellence. Career guidance should therefore be an ongoing process that nurtures learners’ talents, broadens their horizons, and equips them with the knowledge, skills, values, and resilience needed to succeed in higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.

By investing in effective career guidance and counselling, schools are not only preparing learners for successful careers but also contributing to national development by producing skilled, productive, and responsible citizens.
